Short answer: Verbal Discord invites fail because server names are spelled, not said — by the time someone searches for "that gaming server," the moment is gone. Put your permanent invite link behind one tap, add a single reason to join in under ten words, and make sure your #welcome channel answers "what happens here" in one glance. The tap does the joining; the server does the keeping.
This works for gaming communities, study groups, fan servers, creator hangouts — anywhere the pitch happens face-to-face and the joining happens on a phone.
Why "just search for us on Discord" dies
| Step | What you ask them to do | Where it dies |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Remember the server name | "We're called Pixel Forge — one word, P-I-X-E-L..." | Dies mid-spelling. They smile and nod. |
| 2. Search later | Open Discord → search → find the right one | They never open Discord "later." Later is never. |
| 3. Pick the right server | Five servers with similar names appear | Wrong one, or they give up at the list. |
| 4. Accept the invite | Tap join, read rules, say hi | Only reachable if steps 1–3 survived. They didn't. |
Every step is a door the person has to walk through. A tap card removes all four.
5 ways to get the invite onto their phone
| Method | Cost (checked October 2026) | What it does | Honest take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tap card → permanent invite link | $19 one-time, no subscription | One tap opens your Discord invite in their browser; two taps and they're in | Zero spelling, zero searching. The invite link is permanent, so the locked card never goes stale. |
| Printed QR code on a flyer or table tent | $0–$10 printing | Scan → invite link | Free and decent — but it only works where you can leave paper, and it looks like an ad, not a personal invite. |
| "I'll text you the link" | $0 | You send the invite link after the event | Works when you remember. You won't remember at 11 PM after a 6-hour LAN party. |
| Verbal + they search | $0 | Nothing to hand them | The failure mode this whole post is about. Avoid. |
| MOO mini cards with the link printed | ~$0.30–0.42/card (checked Oct 2026) | Physical card they take home | Fine for the keepsake crowd, but the URL still has to be typed or scanned — and URLs get reprinted when links change. A locked tap card with a permanent invite link sidesteps that. |
The 4-step in-person join ritual
- Make the invite link permanent first. In your server settings: create an invite set to never expire with no use limit. A locked NFC card can't be reprogrammed, so the link it carries must outlive every event you'll ever attend.
- Give the reason in under ten words. "Tap this — it's where we plan Friday game nights." Not "join our community" — one concrete thing that happens there.
- Hand them the tap and watch the invite open. "Go ahead, tap it with your phone." Their browser opens your invite; they accept. Ten seconds, done at the event, not "later."
- Make #welcome answer the question. A pinned message: what this server is, when the next event is, and which channel to say hi in. Most people who accept an invite and see a dead-looking server leave within a day.
Honest alternatives
- QR code in your streaming overlay or event signage — free, and it scales to people you never meet. But it converts the casually curious, not the person standing in front of you.
- Email the invite after a convention — works if you collected emails (badge scans, sign-up sheets). Slower, and open rates will eat half your joins.
- Just make the server worth finding — the unsexy truth: if your server is genuinely active with a weekly event, people will hunt it down. The tap card just removes the hunt for everyone else.
What NOT to do
- Don't use an expiring invite on a locked card. Default Discord invites expire in 7 days — that's a dead card. Permanent invite or nothing.
- Don't dump new members into #general. A welcome channel with the basics converts a joiner into a regular; a wall of memes sends them back out.
- Don't spam the invite. One tap per conversation. The card is an invitation, not a flyer under a windshield wiper.
FAQ
Does the invite link work if they don't have Discord installed?
Yes — the invite opens in their browser, which prompts them to install the app or continue on web. Either way, the server is in front of them.
What if my server changes names?
Invite links don't care about the server name — the permanent link keeps working. That's why it pairs well with a locked card.
Can one card join different servers for different events?
A locked card holds one link. If you run several servers, one card per server (or point the card at a link-in-bio-style page listing all of them). Packs run 2/$29 up to 50/$399.
