I'm a Mobile Mechanic — How Do Customers Leave Me a Review When There's No Counter?
On this page · 6 sections

Hand the customer a tap card when you hand back their keys. That's the whole fix. You're a mobile mechanic — your "shop" is a driveway, a parking lot, a fleet yard. There's no counter where a review stand can sit, and your customer is already thinking about their next errand. A small NFC tap card you carry in your tool bag lets them tap their phone and land straight on your Google review page in under 10 seconds — before they drive off. No app for them, no signup, no "I'll do it later."

Why mobile mechanics lose reviews (it's the location, not the service)

Most review advice assumes a storefront: "put a QR stand on the counter." You don't have one. Your customer interactions happen in three moments — when you arrive, when you hand over the finished job, and when you leave. Only one of those moments gives every customer 30 spare seconds: the handover, when the job is done.

The problem with the free alternatives is timing:

  • An email or text after the job — arrives after the adrenaline of a fixed car has faded. Response rates crater.
  • A QR code on the invoice — works if they read the invoice; most mobile mechanics get paid by card reader on the spot and the customer never looks at it.
  • Just asking verbally — works great until you forget on the 4th job of the day, or the customer says "sure!" and never does it.

The tap card fixes the moment: the physical card is in your hand at the handover of every job, for every customer, and tapping it is faster than unlocking their phone's camera.

The exact setup (one-time, about 15 minutes)

  1. Get your Google review link. Open your Google Business Profile, go to your profile, and use Google's "Share review form" option — it gives you a short review URL. (Free, takes 2 minutes.)
  2. Put that link on an NFC card. Any NTAG card works, but a branded one looks like you run a real business, not a side hustle. Order a card with the review link baked in — Pocket Factory's tap cards open your link directly, come with your branding designed for you, and cost $19 once with free US shipping. No subscription, no monthly fee.
  3. Make it part of the handover script. "She's all set — if you have 30 seconds, an honest review really helps. Just tap this card on your phone and it opens my review page." Hand it to them with the keys. Don't just mention it — put it in their hand.
  4. Keep one card for every bay of work you do. Two cards ($29 one-time) covers the one you hand around the job and a backup in the van.

How tap cards compare to the other ways mobile techs ask for reviews

Method Cost Ask happens Friction for customer
NFC tap card $19 one-time (Pocket Factory); others $14.99–$38 one-time as shown Oct 20, 2026* At handover, card in their hand One tap, no app, no camera
QR code on invoice Free When/if they read the invoice Must open camera, frame the code
Text/email after the job Free Minutes to hours later Open a link whenever they get around to it — most don't
Verbal ask only Free At handover Must search your business name on Google manually

*Competitor one-time card prices as listed in mikestuzzi.com's "8 Best NFC Google Review Cards in 2026" roundup, checked Oct 20, 2026: mTap $14.99, V1CE $38, Digifeel $29.90. Prices change; check vendor pages.

Honest alternatives

If you're truly at $0: print a QR code on your invoice or service summary and ask every customer at handover. It's free and it does capture reviews — just fewer of them, because the customer has to do the work. Some shops also use automated texting tools (Podium, NiceJob) — NiceJob lists at $75/month as of Oct 2026. If you're a one-truck operation, a $19 card beats a $75/month platform.

Competitors worth a look: if you want a cheaper unbranded card, mTap's $14.99 review card works the same way technically. What Pocket Factory adds for the extra few dollars: your logo and branding on the card, done-for-you, and the tap goes to whatever link you choose — not a vendor profile page.

One rule: never gate or buy reviews

Ask every customer, not just the happy ones, and never offer discounts in exchange for five-star reviews. Google's policy prohibits review incentives and review gating (only asking happy customers), and violating it can get your profile penalized. The card is just a shortcut to the review form — what the customer writes is up to them.

FAQ

Does the tap card work with iPhones and Android?

Yes. It works on iPhone XS or newer and NFC Android, with the printed QR backup, and no app is needed — the phone just opens the link.

What if the customer changes their Google review later?

Fine — the card only opens the review page. You're not locked to anything.

Can the same card send people to my booking page instead?

Pocket Factory cards can be set to any link you choose — your Google review page, your booking page, your site. If you later want the card to point somewhere else, that's a programming question for whatever card you buy; ask the vendor before ordering.

How long does a Pocket Factory card take to arrive?

Most standard orders are expected to be produced and shipped within approximately 3–5 business days; delays are possible. US shipping is free, and cards ship locked/read-only.
