To get people to follow you on Instagram in person, put your profile one tap away and ask when they're already interested, for example with a PVC NFC card from Pocket Factory, from USD 19 for one matte card, that offers to open your Instagram profile on a compatible phone. Saying your handle out loud requires people to find the right account; a tap or a scan opens your profile so they can choose whether to follow.
Pocket Factory: Your business logo on a card. A tap on a compatible phone offers to open your link. The link can be your website, Instagram, Google reviews, booking page, menu or pay link. It's an NFC card with an NTAG215 chip, pre-programmed with one URL you supply, from USD 19 for one matte card, with no app or subscription. Cards include a QR code on the back by default and a protective sleeve.
The same approach works for TikTok and Facebook, which are covered below. One honest note up front: no card, sticker or QR code can follow you on someone's behalf. It opens your profile; the person still taps Follow.
How to get people to follow you on Instagram in person
Step 1: Copy your profile link
Your Instagram profile link is instagram.com/ followed by your username (for example instagram.com/yourshop). You can also get it in the app from your profile's share option. For TikTok the format is tiktok.com/@yourhandle, and for a Facebook Page it's the Page's facebook.com address. Test the exact profile link on another phone before ordering, rather than supplying a single post or a short-lived campaign URL.
Step 2: Pick one platform for the card
A Pocket Factory card opens one link. Choose the account your customers use and where you post useful updates. If you really need several, either order separate batches or point the card at a link-in-bio page that lists them all (this adds a navigation step).
Step 3: Hand it over at a natural moment
The best moments are when someone compliments your work: "I love this" at a market table, a client photographing their new nails, a guest asking who did the flowers. That's when "tap here to follow, we post new stuff every week" lands.
Step 4: Give a reason to follow
"Follow us" is weak. "We post restocks and the next market date on Instagram first" or "Before-and-afters go up every Friday" gives people a reason that's true for your account.
Step 5: Keep a card where phones already come out
At the checkout point, the photo spot or your booth sign. Keep the card within reach for people who have their phone in hand.
Make the business profile worth opening
Before an event, check that your bio and recent posts explain what you do and what someone will get by following. Put a useful introduction or example of your work near the top. A card opens the page; your content still has to give people a reason to stay.
If people follow your personal account instead of the shop, point the card at the business account and name it in the ask: "This is the shop's Instagram; we post new arrivals here," if that is what you actually post. They do not need to search for the business from your personal profile. If your personal account already is your business, a separate account may not be necessary.
For clinics and appointment-based businesses
Offer the card during a calm wait or at checkout, not while someone is receiving care or aftercare instructions. At a vet clinic, try "We share pet photos and clinic updates here" if that is what you actually post. Get permission before posting a client's pet photo.
Instagram's free QR code vs an NFC card vs saying your handle
| Method | Cost | Best when | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Say your handle out loud | Free | Short, easy-to-spell handles | Typos, similar accounts, people forgetting by the time they unlock their phone |
| Instagram's built-in QR code on a printed sign | Free (plus printing) | Booth signs, tables, mirrors, posters where people can scan without asking | People have to open the camera and decide to scan; easy to walk past |
| Paper business card with your handle | Varies with quantity and printing | Handing out lots of cards at events | Same typing problem as saying it, just later |
| NFC tap card (QR code on the back) | From $19 one-time at Pocket Factory | Hand-offs at a counter, chair or booth where you can say "tap here" | Opens one link; someone has to offer it |
If you're printing a big booth banner anyway, consider adding Instagram's QR code; printing or artwork changes may cost extra. If you hand out hundreds of cards at a trade show, compare paper printing quotes with the NFC pack price. The tap card earns its place at the moment you're face to face with someone who likes what you do.
TikTok and Facebook
TikTok
Your profile link is tiktok.com/@yourhandle. TikTok creators often get in-person interest from people who have seen a video ("are you the one who...?"). A card at the table or in your pocket gives them a way to open your profile; they still choose whether to follow. If your TikTok and Instagram both matter, put the one you post on most on the card and mention the other in your bio.
For a business, link the Facebook Page, not your personal profile. Facebook tends to matter most for local service businesses and community events, where people want to see hours, posts and event dates. If reviews matter more to you than followers, a Google review link is usually the better choice for the card; see how to get more Google reviews in person.
What happens when someone taps
On iPhone XS and newer, NFC works without an app; iPhone 7–X use the NFC reader in Control Center. Compatible Android phones need NFC turned on. A tap shows a notification or opens the link; Apple and Android document this behavior (Apple's Core NFC documentation, Android's NFC documentation). Whether the profile opens in the Instagram app or a browser depends on the phone and its settings. Cards have a QR code on the back by default, which can be scanned with a compatible phone camera or QR-scanning app. Instagram may require sign-in before the person can follow. A Pocket Factory card doesn't track taps or follows, so watch your follower count around events if you want a rough read.
Good to know before you order: choose the URL you want the card to open before production; Pocket Factory programs the card with the URL you supply. Details: Can I change the link on my card?.

What if I change my Instagram username?
