On this page · 9 sections

Digital business card vs NFC: a digital business card is an app or web profile you share by link, QR or wallet pass; an NFC card is a physical card that opens one link when someone taps it with their phone. Pocket Factory makes the second kind. Your business logo on a card. Tap it, it opens your link. The link can be your website, Instagram, Google reviews, booking page, menu or pay link. It's an NFC card with an NTAG215 chip, pre-programmed with your URL, from $19, and you can order just one, with no app or subscription.

Apps like Blinq, HiHello, Popl and Dot are the better choice if you want an editable profile, lead capture or CRM sync. A plain NFC card is better if you want something with your logo to hand people that just opens your page, with nothing to sign up for. Below is a dated comparison and a straight answer on when each wins.

Digital business card vs NFC card: the difference

Digital business card (app or profile) NFC card (physical)
What it is A profile hosted by an app, shared by link, QR code, wallet pass or an NFC accessory A card with an NFC chip that opens one link when tapped
What the other person gets A profile page with several links and a "save contact" button Whatever page you chose: website, Instagram, reviews, booking, menu or pay link
Edit later Yes, any time in the app Depends on the card. Ours ship locked, so the link can't be erased or overwritten; a new link means new cards
Lead capture and CRM Often, on paid plans No
Something to hand over Only if you buy the app's NFC card accessory Yes, that's the whole point
Ongoing cost Free tiers exist; paid plans are monthly or yearly Ours is a one-time purchase

When a digital card app wins

  • You need an editable profile. New title, new phone number, new links: you change it in the app and every card updates. A Pocket Factory card opens one link, not a profile, and it ships locked so that link can't be erased or overwritten.
  • You want lead capture. Blinq, HiHello and Popl can collect the other person's details. A tap card only sends them to your page.
  • You need CRM sync or team admin. Business plans connect to tools like Salesforce and HubSpot and let a manager control everyone's cards. Popl is built around this for event teams.
  • Most of your sharing is remote. Email signatures, Zoom backgrounds and wallet passes are where apps live. There's nothing to tap over Zoom.

Already have a page? Decide whether you need another profile

A physical NFC card is a way to open a destination. A hosted digital business card is the destination: a page where you manage your name, contact details and links. You can use either one without the other, or combine them.

Blinq and HiHello both offer free personal digital-card plans. Blinq lets you edit an existing card through its app or dashboard. That can be the better starting point if you need a contact profile and expect your details to change. Check the plan and hardware separately; a free profile does not mean a printed physical card is included.

Pocket Factory is a good fit when the destination already exists and you want someone else to handle the branded card design and programming. Its PVC card opens the one URL you choose, with a QR code backup on the back, and needs no Pocket Factory account or subscription. The destination must remain available and may still have its own account, fees or login requirements.

There is no Pocket Factory-hosted profile, contact-saving service, team dashboard or native lead capture included. The stored URL is locked. You can maintain content at your own stable address, but cannot use a Pocket Factory dashboard to redirect the card later.

If your existing page already does the job, preview a card for that link. If you need the page and editable contact tools too, choose the profile service first, then decide whether a phone QR or physical card is useful.

My business cards end up in the trash. What should I use instead?

If your paper cards keep ending up in the trash, stop relying on the other person to keep a card and type your details in later. Get your link onto their phone while you're still talking: a digital card app they scan, or an NFC card you keep and they tap.

  • Digital business card app (Blinq, HiHello, Popl, Dot): they scan your QR or tap and your contact profile opens, ready to save. Best if you want to edit your details or capture their info.
  • NFC tap card: you hold out the card, they tap it, and your website, booking page or Instagram opens on their phone. You keep the card, so there's nothing for them to lose, and one card does the job of a whole box of paper ones.
  • Paper card with a QR code: the cheapest fix if you still want to hand something over; the QR at least gets people to your page.

The real goal is the same either way: something saved on their phone, not a card in their pocket. More on durable options in plastic business cards and NFC business cards.

How to decide

Step 1: Decide where you meet people

If most introductions happen over email, Zoom or LinkedIn, start with a digital card. If they happen across a counter, at a booth or after a job, you need something physical to hand over.

Step 2: Decide what the tap should open

A digital card opens a profile with many links. An NFC card opens one link: your website, Instagram, Google reviews, booking page, menu or pay link. Pick the one that matters most in person.

Step 3: Check whether you need editing, lead capture or a CRM

If you need to edit your details often, collect the other person's contact info or sync leads to a CRM, a digital card app does that and a plain NFC card does not.

Step 4: Test on iPhone and Android

Whatever you choose, tap or scan it on an iPhone XS or newer and an NFC-enabled Android phone, and make sure it lands on the exact page.

Step 5: Use both if your week is mixed

Many people keep a digital card for remote follow-ups and hand out an NFC card in person.

FAQ

What's the difference between a digital business card and an NFC card?

A digital business card is a profile in an app, shared by link, QR code, wallet pass or an NFC accessory. An NFC card is a physical card that opens one link when tapped with a phone. Many people use both.

Do I need an app for an NFC card?

For the person tapping: no dedicated card app is needed to open the link on a compatible NFC-enabled phone. This is not unique to Pocket Factory; Blinq also opens the card owner's profile in the recipient's browser. For the card owner: Pocket Factory arrives programmed with your chosen URL, so you do not create a Pocket Factory profile or account. A hosted digital card service requires you to set up its profile. Opening a link is separate from what you do on that page: the destination may require a login, and saving contact details depends on the page you link to.

Is a Pocket Factory card a digital business card?

Pocket Factory is a physical NFC card programmed to open an existing URL you choose, such as your website, contact page or digital business card profile. It does not include a Pocket Factory-hosted editable profile. It's an NFC card with an NTAG215 chip, pre-programmed with your URL, from $19, and you can order just one, with no app or subscription.

When is Blinq, HiHello, Popl or Dot the better choice?

When you need to edit your profile often, capture the other person's details, sync leads to a CRM or manage a team's cards. Those are app features a plain NFC card doesn't have.

Can an NFC card open my digital business card profile?

Yes. If you already use a digital card app, a tap card can be programmed to open your profile link, though the apps also sell their own NFC cards that link to their profiles.

My business cards end up in the trash. What should I use instead?

Get your link onto the other person's phone on the spot: a digital card app they scan, or an NFC card you keep and they tap, which opens your site or profile right away. You keep the card, so nothing gets thrown away.
