Short answer: Most detailing bookings come from people who already know you: past customers who are due again, and the friends they tell. Book the next appointment at the handoff, before you leave the driveway, by opening your booking page on the customer's phone. Then text past customers at about three and six months, with a specific open slot.
Where do detailing bookings actually come from?
When detailers on r/AutoDetailing talk about a schedule that went quiet, the advice from other owners is rarely "buy more ads." It's "work your list." A customer who paid for a full detail already trusts you, already knows your price, and already has a car that will need you again. Getting them to book a second time costs less than finding someone new.
That gives you three levers, in this order: rebook at the handoff, follow up on a schedule, and fill gaps with nearby customers.
1. Book the next one before you leave
The finished car is the best sales pitch you will ever have. Use it. During the walk-around, ask: "Most people keep it like this with a maintenance wash every few weeks. Want me to put you on the calendar?" Then open your booking page on their phone, either by tapping a booking card to it or by texting the link, and let them pick the date while you pack up.
Two things make this work:
- The link goes straight to booking. Not your homepage, not your Instagram. A page with three or four clear packages and a calendar.
- The booking page asks for a card or a deposit. Detailers in r/AutoDetailing threads say a card-on-file step cut their no-shows. Check whether your booking tool supports it.
2. Offer a maintenance plan, not just a next date
A plan turns one booking into several. Keep it simple: a monthly or every-other-week exterior wash, a quarterly interior, and priority scheduling. Price it so it's clearly cheaper than booking one-off details. Pitch it at the reveal, especially after a ceramic coating, when the customer most wants the car to stay that way.
3. Follow up at three and six months
Put a reminder on every completed job. At about three months, send a short, personal text: "It's been about three months since we did the [vehicle]. Want me to hold a spot for you next week?" If they don't answer, try again at six months, then leave it. Get consent to text when they book, and give an easy way to opt out.
4. Fill gaps with customers near your next job
When a day has a hole, look at who lives near the jobs you already have booked and hasn't been in for a while. Text a few of them a real, specific slot: "I'm on your street Tuesday at 1 p.m., want it?" The drive costs you almost nothing because you're already going there.
5. Ask for referrals the right way
Ask happy customers who they know with a car that needs help, and give them a paper card to pass on. Ask permission before handing a card to anyone, and never put cards under wipers on strangers' cars; detailers widely see that as an easy way to earn a bad review.
A weekly booking routine
| When | What you do |
|---|---|
| Every job | Walk-around, rebook ask, booking page opened on their phone, review ask |
| Monday | Text customers who hit three or six months since their last detail |
| When a gap opens | Text past customers near your booked jobs with a specific time |
| Monthly | Check which customers are on a plan and who dropped off |
More for detailers
Questions detailers ask
What's the fastest way to get more detailing bookings?
Rebook existing customers at the handoff and text past customers who are due for another detail.
Should my business card link to my website or my booking page?
Your booking page. Every extra click between interest and a calendar loses bookings.
How often should I contact past detailing customers?
A short personal text at about three months and again at six months is enough for most customers.
Do maintenance plans help?
Yes, when they're simple and clearly cheaper than one-off details. Pitch them right after the reveal.
Can a tap card replace my booking software?
No. The card only opens your booking page. You still need a booking tool behind it.
