Why some NFC business cards charge a monthly fee
The chip in an NFC card stores one short link. On app-based cards, that link points to a profile page the company hosts, and the monthly plan pays for things that page can do: edit your details any time, see how many people tapped, capture leads, sync to a CRM and manage a team. If you need those, the fee is fair.
If you only need the tap to open one link you already have (your website, Instagram, Google review page, booking page, menu or pay link), you don't need a hosted profile, so there's nothing to subscribe to. That's how a Pocket Factory card works: the card is pre-programmed with your URL, and the trade-off is no editable profile and no tap analytics.
Year-one math, using the prices above: a Blinq card with your brand ($59.99) plus Premium billed annually ($7.33 × 12 = $87.96) comes to $147.95. A Wave card with your design ($41) plus Pro ($7 × 12 = $84) comes to $125, or $41 on Wave's free plan. One matte Pocket Factory card is $19 before any applicable tax, with free U.S. shipping, and a GoToTags blank is $0.30 if you're happy to program it and skip the logo.
What changes the price
- Material. PVC plastic is the cheapest; wood, steel and gold-plated cards cost two to six times more.
- Printing your design. Most sellers charge more to print your logo than to sell their own branded card. Pocket Factory prices include your logo.
- Quantity. Per-card prices drop with pack size. Pocket Factory: 1 card $19, 10 cards $10.90 each, 50 cards $7.98 each.
- Programming. A blank tag is cheap because you write the link yourself; pre-programmed cards arrive ready to tap.
- Chip. NTAG213 holds 144 bytes and NTAG215 holds 504 bytes. A normal web link fits on either, so the chip rarely changes what you pay much.
- Software. Profile platforms charge monthly for editing, analytics and team features; direct-link cards don't.
When something cheaper (or pricier) is the better buy
| Option | Cost | Better when | Worse when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper cards with a QR code | Check current pricing; usually pennies per card in bulk | You hand out hundreds at a trade show and don't expect them back | You want a card people keep and tap; paper gets tossed |
| Blank NFC tags (DIY) | About $0.30 each | You only need a few, don't need a logo and can use NFC Tools | You want a printed, branded card that looks finished |
| Free digital card app | $0 on free tiers | You want an editable profile and don't need a physical card | Someone has to open an app or a link you send them |
| App-based NFC card | $20–$60 plus $3–$10/month for paid plans | You need analytics, lead capture, CRM sync or team admin | You just want one link and no bill every month |
| Pocket Factory logo card | $19 one-time, $7.98 each at 50 | You want your logo on a card that opens one link, even if you order just one | You need an editable profile, analytics or a metal card |
| Metal NFC card | $50–$140 | The card itself is part of a premium pitch | You're handing them to lots of customers |
How to choose an NFC business card in 3 steps
Step 1: Decide what the tap should open
Pick the one link that matters most when you hand the card over: your website, Instagram, Google review page, booking page, menu or pay link.
Step 2: Decide if you need a subscription
If you need to edit a profile, see taps or capture leads, compare app plans. If one fixed link is enough, a one-time card is cheaper.
Step 3: Price your real quantity
Compare the per-card price at the number you'll actually use (one for you, ten for staff, fifty for customers), plus shipping and any QR backup. Our brand-by-brand price table for logo cards lists one-card and two-card prices, minimum orders and monthly fees.
Pocket Factory in one paragraph: Your business logo on a card. Tap it, it opens your link. The card opens one link you choose: your website, Instagram, Google reviews, booking page, menu or pay link. It's a PVC NFC card with an NTAG215 chip, pre-programmed with your URL and tested before it ships, from $19 for one matte card ($21 glossy) down to $7.98 per card in a 50-pack ($399 matte). You can order just one. There's no app, account, subscription or tap analytics. Cards have a QR code on the back by default and work by tapping an NFC-enabled iPhone (XS or newer) or Android phone. U.S. shipping is free. Most standard orders are expected to be produced and shipped within approximately 3–5 business days; delays are possible.
Good to know before you order: cards ship locked (read-only), so the link can't be erased or overwritten. No battery or charging is needed. If your link changes later, order new cards. Details: Can I change the link on my card?.
